Cynthia Hampton and John Ensign Affair

The woman said to have had a love affair with US Senator John Ensign has been identified as Cynthia Hampton.

Sen. John Ensign, a Republican party Senator from Nevada, told a press conference with a brief statement that he indeed had an extramarital affair with a woman a year ago. The Senator did not confirm his relationship was with former staffers wife, Cynthia Hampton, but reports suggest it was indeed her.

46-year-old Cynthia Hampton was a wife of a former senior staffer to Ensign. Cynthia Hampton had worked in various Republican party roles.

John Ensign admitted to violating his marriage vows in the statement, but still remains with his wife. He made no mention of his political future over the apparent love affair with Cynthia Hampton.

Doug Hampton, a former top aide to Ensign, is the husband of Cynthia Hampton. Doug and Cynthia Hampton both worked in Washington DC at the time of the love affair.

Media in the US capital said Cynthia Hampton had worked on Senator Ensign’s “Battle Born” Political Action Committee at one point.

Other reports said Cynthia Hampton was also the Assistant Treasurer of Republican organization, the NRCC. Blogs noted that the National Republican Congressional Committee treasurer, Chris Ward, was arrested in 2008 for embezzling millions of dollars in financial funds to the political committee, and suggested Cynthia Hampton may have been connected with this.

It is also reported that Senator John Ensign's love affair with Cynthia Hampton took place between December 2007 and August 2008.

John Ensign told a Las Vegas press conference that he would not name the woman in his love affair, but all reports said it was indeed Cynthia Hampton.

Sen John Ensign statement: "I will not mention any names but the woman who I was involved with and her husband were close friends and both of them worked for me. Our families were close. That closeness put me into situations which led to my inappropriate behavior. We caused deep pain to both families and for that I am sorry."

Update: Media now say Cynthia Hampton, her husband Douglas Hampton and 19-year-old son may be involved in a pay scandal that saw Douglas and Cynthia Hampton's son paid from $1,000-$19,000 a week for "administrative jobs" at Republican political institutions in Washington DC.
